Mustafa Alimanovic
Europe – Bosnia- Herzegovina

In 2004, Mustafa was a single father supporting three daughters. He struggled to keep the family afloat, working twelve hours a day but still not making enough money in Bosnia-Herzegovina's war ravaged economy. Mustafa thought he had finally found an opportunity to turn their lives around when he was offered a temporary job for good pay in Slovenia. But he could find no one to care for his daughters so he could go to work. He ran out of hope. In a moment of desperation and despair, Mustafa picked up a live grenade and tried to kill himself by slamming it against his body. He didn’t die, but he did severely wound his legs and chest. "I was not thinking about the consequences of my act. I knew my suffering needed to come to an end, and hurting myself was the only solution I found at that moment."

Mustaffa was referred by the hospital to Survivor Corps. We helped him find an organization that would help pay for his new leg. At first, Mustaffa was ashamed of he suicide attempt, but he realized how much he had to live for and he just wanted to get back to providing for his children. He could not return to his former job as a truck driver, and though trained as a locksmith, he did not have the tools he needed to do business. Survivor Corps put Mustaffa in touch with a local organization that provided construction materials and tools, which enabled him to build a workshop and start a business as a locksmith. Now Mustaffa is finally making enough money to support his three daughters and make much-needed improvements to their house. "With support I was able to become socially active again and gain self confidence through my work. I live a normal life now. I am much stronger and even more dedicated to my family. I hope I will be able to provide for the education of my children so that they can become an independent citizens.”
